bad police work

So CNN has this headline, Police: Dad left toddler outside to freeze to death
His wife was probably like:
"You're going to spoil that kid!"
And I imagine there wasn't any room left in the freezer for a toddler...
We all know meat goes bad at room temperature. What else was he supposed to do?
