beetlejuice

<< Apr 11, 2007 @ 15:24 >>

So... as a true procrastinator is want to do, I was reading the ingredients on my Minute Maid® brand Ruby Red Grapefruit Juice:

"...LESS THAN 1% OF: VITAMIN C (ASCORBIC ACID), NATURAL FLAVORS [sic], CITRIC ACID (PROVIDES TARTNESS), COCHINEAL EXTRACT (FOR COLOR)."

Cochineal Extract?! Full stop.

For those of you who aren't familiar, allow me to quote the wikipedia:

"A deep crimson dye is extracted from the female cochineal insects. ... cochineal extract is a colouring made from the raw dried and pulverised bodies of insects ... The insects are killed by immersion in hot water (after which they are dried) or by exposure to sunlight, steam, or the heat of an oven."

Yes. That's right. I'm drinking ground up bugs. I guess it is supposed to be better for me. Artificial red food colouring is a lot cheaper, so I'm kind of surprised.

I said I was a procrastinator, not an English major.... although, I can see where you'd get those two confused. OH SNAP!
